The short version

NiceTerminal works on your Mac. There are no analytics in the app or on this website, and we don’t sell or share your data. If you use sync, your data is encrypted on your Mac before it is sent, and only your password or your recovery key can unlock it, so we can’t read it.

What stays on your Mac

Your sessions and what you type and see in them never leave your Mac. Your profiles, saved passwords and keys, quick commands, session history, known hosts and settings are stored on your Mac, and without a sync account none of it is sent anywhere. A vault you lock with a master passphrase always stays on the Mac that has it.

Sync account

To sync between Macs you create an account with an email address and a password. Your password itself is never sent: NiceTerminal turns it into one key that signs you in and another that unlocks your data, and only the first one leaves your Mac.

Before anything is uploaded, NiceTerminal encrypts it on your Mac. We store the encrypted data, when it changed and which of your Macs uploaded it, and we cannot decrypt it. You choose what syncs in Settings › Account & sync.

To run your account we keep your email address and what is needed to check your sign-in. For each Mac you sign in on, we keep its name, its model, its macOS version and when it last synced. The sync server’s logs note, with the account’s ID, when an account is created, signs in with its recovery key, changes its password or is deleted, and they record the IP address of a Mac that sends too many requests.

Delete your account in Settings › Account & sync, and the server deletes its data, its Macs and the account itself. Each Mac keeps its own copy of your data until you remove it there.

Updates

While Automatic Updates is on in Settings, NiceTerminal asks niceterminal.app once a day whether a new version is available. The request carries the app’s version and, like any request, your IP address. It sends no system profile and not your macOS version.

This website

This website has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party fonts or scripts. It is served through Cloudflare, which carries the connection and may receive a report when a page fails to load. Our server’s logs keep each request’s IP address, page and browser for 14 days.
